Wimbledon Introduces Video Replay System This Season.

Wimbledon court with video review system

The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in implementing replay technology.

Replay technology are set to arrive at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.

Competitors will gain the right to question specific calls from the official, echoing the protocol already in place at both the US Open and the Aussie major.

This technology is slated for use on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This development arrives only a season following the AELTC rolled out electronic line calling, which effectively ended the longstanding tradition of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players will not be permitted to challenge the call of the ELC system, but they can request the official to re-examine other decisions, including:

  • Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • If a shot touched an opponent's racquet or body during play.
  • Potential hindrance end of a rally.

Importantly, there is no limit on the amount of reviews a competitor can request.

A Recent Example

An illustrative example occurred in Indian Wells recently, where a top player initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.

Draper conceded it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but believed his rival had "used the regulations effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a replay and ruled the player was responsible for hindrance, granting the rally to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

Video reviews are not new for Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the American major for two years and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have the system implemented at every one of its tournaments.

Other Changes

A further change at The Championships this year will be the introduction of visual indicators on displays to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses instances where the crowd have occasionally been uncertain whether a ball was out or in.

In other news, with precisely 100 days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have also revealed an increase in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
