The Tottenham defender found the net on two occasions as Spurs prolonged their winning streak on the road in the top division and handed the Toffees their initial loss at their new home.

The Toffees were undefeated in their last five matches at their new ground at Bramley-Moore Dock, having departed their historic home behind after 133 years at the end of the previous campaign.

But Tottenham's leader the Dutchman pounced on two occasions from set-pieces in the first half to place their impressive record at jeopardy, and they were unable to turn it around before Pape Matar Sarr - set up by ex-Everton forward the Brazilian - headed home a third to seal the victory.

The Everton defender believed he had equalized the scores five minutes after the defender's first goal, directing a bullet header past the Spurs keeper from an set-piece.

Beto, in the meantime, missed a number of chances, while Vicario made a series of fine stops to ensure the London club went five away games without defeat in the Premier League.

But the VAR stepped in, advising the match official to review the score on the screen and the official ruled that the winger and the attacker were in offside positions and had impeded with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

The win moves the manager's side up to third in the Premier League, five points off local foes and leaders Arsenal.

Everton remain in 14th position and are half a dozen points ahead of the drop zone.

Following a drab weekday performance in the Champions League against the French side, where they managed a only two shots on target, the manager opted for Randal Kolo Muani up front instead of former Toffees player Richarlison.

Toffees breakdown: Everton missing striker's instinct

Everton's new home had been a fortress, but it seems the novelty may have faded somewhat and fans headed to the gates after Sarr's third for Spurs.

The end in Everton's unbeaten home run will not be a major concern for David Moyes, but their attacking woes are.

Beto and Thierno Barry - the Toffees' two recognised centre-forwards - had netted just one league goal combined before the weekend's outing.

And they were failed to add to that poor tally on a damp and dreary evening on Merseyside.

Beto's form was epitomized when he chose to overhead kick a clear chance from near the goal, despite having room and opportunity to readjust for a simpler shot that would have challenged the keeper.

The substitute, as well, was unable to influence the game after coming on for Beto in the 65th minute.

It was not for a shortage of chance. The majority of Everton's offensive moves came through Grealish and the forward, who relentlessly whipped threatening crosses into the Tottenham box.
