The Iconic Puzzle Game Wouldn't Triumph at The Game Awards — An Additional Classification May Address This Issue

Whenever a prominent prize-giving event nears, there’s always a demand for the addition of new categories to acknowledge overlooked contributions and delight the spirits of fans with niche passions.

My colleague has already made for a horror game category. That would rule. So would tabletop games, which is someone's personal cause. But they will have to forgive me if I try to elbow in front because like all dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument for why my demand is the most urgent and significant. This is the request: We need a category for puzzle games.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Classifying creative works defies precise measurement; it remains highly personal, and inevitably spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. This explains why film award organizations don’t do it. However, it represents an unavoidable compromise for the industry of interactive entertainment, which are so diverse they barely qualify a single creative category.

To recognize the complete range of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.

Existing Game Classification System

Leading game ceremonies offer these award types recognizing Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these award types successfully include a lot of ground, making space possible for most games within them.

Not so for logic-based experiences. No appropriate category exists to put them. Consider three of recent excellent titles, showing diverse approaches: building puzzles from a specific release, fast-paced pattern recognition of another game, thought-provoking social scenarios from additional release. Which classification works among existing types? Nowhere, that’s where.

Recognition Challenges

Many instances occur of brilliant puzzle games launched regularly lacking appropriate categories at major award shows, if they accidentally match award groups including Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested independent game categories.

  • A renowned logic title received no recognition completely during that awards season
  • Another imaginative release was excluded that year
  • A beloved organization game was overlooked in 2021
  • Just some logic titles barely qualified for small studio or handheld classifications

Significance of Puzzle Games

These are often modest productions, however the design in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Well-known matching games stand as most popular titles worldwide maintaining this status for many years.

The legendary block-stacking game competes with famous sandbox experiences for the title of most purchased experience; it additionally competes as greatest title ever. Puzzle games are foundational to the art of video games, while interacting across multiple categories.

Proposal and Rationale

Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. You could fill five nominees engaging, different, qualified experiences annually without trouble — actually, with challenge, because you’d have to leave numerous deserving experiences.

To emphasize again, these are games lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Logic title developers operate at the demanding boundary of video game design, producing among essential manifestations of the video game form. Similar to film action specialists, they warrant appreciation. Don't make them wait 35 years.
