England and Wales Placed Together for 2027 Rugby World Cup Down Under

Draw event for the 2027 tournament
The pool stage draw was conducted by rugby icons such as two-time World Cup winner Dan Carter.

The English side and their Welsh counterparts have been drawn in the same pool for the 2027 Rugby World Cup, promising a major pool stage encounter in Australia. Completing the group in Group F by the Tongan Ikale Tahi and Zimbabwe.

This draw recalls their memorable clash in the pool stages of the 2015 World Cup, where Wales' victory at England's home ground played a part in the English team's surprise group stage elimination.

Other Notable Pool Pairings

Ireland and Scotland have likewise been drawn in a group once again, replicating the scenario from the 2023 edition. On that occasion, they claimed a 36-14 victory, with their opponents failing to progress to the quarter-finals.

Los Teros and Portugal, who each impressed as surprise packages in the last World Cup, round out that Pool D.

Notably, the victors of both Pool D and Pool F are kept apart from defending champions and world number one the Springboks until the final, assuming the South Africans win their assigned pool.

Knockout Implications

Should the groups conclude in line with the current global standings, further leading contenders like the All Blacks and Les Bleus would remain separated from both England and Ireland all the way to the championship decider.

In that scenario, Argentina would be the remaining highly-seeded nation on that side of the knockout draw as England and Ireland.

Hosts Face Major Fixture

Hosts Australia have been drawn alongside their great rivals and triple champions the All Blacks in Group A.

Australia will kick off the World Cup in the city of Perth on October 1st, 2027 in a marquee match designed to launch the competition.

In other groups, holders the Springboks have drawn the Azzurri, Georgia and Romania. The French team are in a pool with the Brave Blossoms, future hosts the United States and Samoa.

Larger Tournament for 2027

Argentina will take on Fiji, Los Leones and Canada as the World Cup expands to 24 teams from the 20 who took part in 2023.

This edition will introduce a last-16 stage for the first time in Rugby World Cup existence.

While the winner of Pool F may be kept apart from some of the rugby's biggest beasts early on, they will have to face the runner-up from Group B – probably the Italians – in the last 16.

Four of the remaining six pool winners will play a third-placed side from the pool stages.
