RAF Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside France's air force in a joint strike against an subterranean weapons facility in Syria used by the Islamic State group (IS), per a report from the British defence ministry.

The site, pinpointed through reconnaissance, was believed to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the statement said, and was located in mountains just to the north of the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"The RAF jets employed laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to hit a several approach shafts down to the site... preliminary assessments suggest the strike was effective," officials stated.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the strike conducted Saturday night and each participating jet returned safely, the MoD added.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

The Islamic State group - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - imposed militant control over parts of Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This action underscores British leadership, and determination to work closely with our partners, to eradicate any resurgence of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the Middle East," the British Defence Secretary John Healey stated.

British military aircraft have carried out overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of the group subsequent to its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank all the members of our armed forces involved in this mission for their professionalism and their bravery," the Defence Secretary added. "They were part of numerous British troops deployed over the festive period. This operation, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who threaten our safety, highlights how British military are ready to step up, continuously, protecting the UK at home and powerful internationally."

Last December, the United States armed forces conducted what it called a "massive strike" against Islamic State objectives in the country, following an ambush killed two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations estimates Daesh still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in both countries.
